History of the Corner Cafe (Cash Block)
Today's Corner Café sits on lot 8, block 7 with a lot size of 86 feet by 20 feet as noted in the Original Plat of the Village, now known as the City of New Lisbon. William Henry Harrison Cash was the owner of this property and in 1903 a fire destroyed all of the building in Block 7.
In November 1903 new construction to replace burned buildings of the Cash Block was completed in by contractor Mr. Piske. (New Lisbon Times, November 18, 1903, P.1)
Cash block over the years has served as a Post Office from 1908 until the construction of a new Post Office in 1962. Mr. Cash rented out the upper floor for offices to a number of professionals, among those known was, a surveyor, the H.J. Mortensen law office, The New Lisbon State Bank which was located on the south end of the first floor from 1911 until 1915, a millinery shop, a beauty salon, and a Real Estate office before becoming a private dining room for the restaurant that now occupies the first floor.
In 1924 Dr. Leroy Stetler, a dentist, acquired the building and established his dental office and his residence on the second story; he continued to lease the first floor to the Post Office. With the relocation of the Post Office in 1962, the first floor was rented to a radio and electrical appliance store, and in 1973 after the death of Dr. Stetler, the upper floor was converted into residential use. For a period of time the building was vacant until 1975 when the first floor was opened as a restaurant.
The alley lying south of the building belonged to Henry Bierbauer. It was reserved as a private alley to allow access to the rear of the building that Bierbauer owned two doors east of the Cash block. The building continued to change hands over the years and also became the place for a saloon, and grocery store.
About 1986 the false front of the roof was changed from tile to shingle, along with the storefront. Among the modifications was the removal of the pressed tin “CASH” name sign that had been over the front door since 1903.
